I've tried several free and open-source layout packages and Kicad is far better than any I've tried, even the free version of Eagle (although, I must admit, that was almost 4 years ago, perhaps it has improved). I use Mentor Graphics PADS at work and I would even say that Kicad is almost as stable and useful as PADS. It could well become a problem if Kicad stops being improved and updated but it is working very well for my current home project.
