By "high level arcanery" are you ruling out utilities such as these? http://caspian.dotconf.net/menu/Software/SendEmail/ http://www.beyondlogic.org/solutions/cmdlinemail/cmdlinemail.htm http://www.infradig.com/ The last one particular has a built in ability do pretty much exactly what you want, i.e. mail a folder full of files one at a time, and is free for personal use.
