The discharge gave off a distinct zap. I was sceptical (and concerned) I also got a small spark when earthing various points on the back of the tube. ( I was been over cautious as I just hate getting bitten.) I put this down to the fact that I only discharged the tube for a split second and remembered later that I should give it a little time. Roger, thanks for the advice with the PTC3. I found PTC3 earlier today in a westec electronics related catalogue but failed to find any specs on them to see if they were similar to the MZ73G 20RM. I dismantled the PTC and found that a large, once white button sized disk was badly burnt on one side. I measured between the faces of the disk at points that looked ok at about 50 ohms, so I thought I would give it clean with fine paper. Cleaning gave the surfaces a very smooth graphite colour look but the resistance then shot up to the 20 K ohms so I guess I made it worse.. I will get a replacement and update with the results. Yes, TV repair shops are closing down and harder to find.
