These pins are actually quite nice, they are often used on bare glass or COG LCDs. Despite the looks they are very sturdy, we soldered a few 100.000 of them and I have never seen one crack or break off. Another good thing is that your PCB looks very much like a DIP package and you can use the edge of the board which is otherwise unusable. You don't need any special tooling although I don't know if they are machine solderable, we soldered them by hand. The only problem is availability.
