I'm glad that I did my share to shatter that perception. :)

I think it sort of makes sense, there is really nothing custom about these 
displays.

They solve a serious problem w/ non-COG displays, which is that you lose the 
area around the LCD which could be used for buttons/LEDs etc. It may also 
make your device bigger than necessary.
