The old XP laptop didn't support widescreen at all (even though the chipset was theoretically capable), and so it was operated in 1600x1200 mode. When the laptop was "refreshed" 18M or so ago, I made sure the new one would support the monitor, and I haven't seen any of the issues you describe. (previous to the LCD, I had a 21inch CRT. It was worth going to the LCD, even without widescreen support, just for the desk space I got back!)
