We started using the ULP for exporting .mnt files as soon as we switched 
from PTH to SMT.

Sounds cool. What is the motivation behind this project?

High volume assemblies are best outsourced to China. One-off protos are not 
worth the setup time. However, it would be nice to have a way to build 
10-100 boards without paying an arm and a leg.

Sparkfun have a "real" ($$$) pick and place, and at one point we were even 
considering buying one. A silly idea, considering our in-house production 
volumes.
