I use Dreamhost because they are cheap and very flexible. They have a
good control panel and also give me a shell. They are big enough to have
what I want and not so big as to no longer care about their customers. I
don't care about 99.999% so their reliability has been fine. The only
down time I have ever noticed (other than my own screwups) has been the
control panel.

When I was looking they were in the top ten as far as number of domains
hosted. Other big players that I had considered were Network Solutions,
WestHost, Verio, Hostway. A couple of big players you might not want are
Yahoo and Amazon, because they are almost certain to try to sway your
payment processing choice.

Can't seem to find the top ten list. Hmm.
