I always just used the actual pcb toner transfer paper, about $1 / sheet at
Al Lasher's.  I know it's expensive, but I only did an ironing every couple
weeks, and it was very easy to use.  For me, $1 was worth saving the hassle
of using other types of free / cheap paper.
