Not all non-nuclear pollutants give you a lot of warning.  We used to have
a plant here in town that manufactured a nematocide that had what they
called "poor warning properties".  If you were exposed, your first hint
was that you were dead.  At least with radioactivity you might notice your
hair falling out.
