I inherited a load of boards with L297 / L293 pairs. The L293 is OK
as an inexpensive driver but I'd have been looking for a cheaper IC
than the L297 logic/power interface. Its functions are pretty basic, and
Microchip have an app note for something similar. Google for Microchip
