I haven't actually used Time Machine, so I might be totally off here. However, I think Time Machine itself works with any USB hard drive. When I've plugged in a drive in the past it's asked it I wanted to use it for Time Machine. I have no idea about network storage as I haven't played around in the software enough to see if you can change the target. I choose no to use Time Machine as it is a little too simple for me. Basically it will keep filling the drive with backups until it is full. As far as I understand it, there isn't a way to limit the size, so if you have 500GB of storage you're using with it, it'll take up the full 500GB of data eventually. The nice thing is that it's saving multiple versions of your data, but I tend to self revision my important things anyway. I backup using a couple of cloning apps which leave me with a drive I can actually boot off of, no restoring needed. I can also browse the drive just like a normal external drive. It's pretty cool!
