Bill, I don't know who you are getting your information from, but diesels have a lot of particulate matter in the exhaust, and the standards are tighter in California. As soon as the carmakers catch up you'll be able to buy new diesels here. Personally, until they are cleaner, I don't want them here and I'm happy with the rules the way they are. I also approve of our regular smog checks. Every time I am stuck in traffic in another state, the stench of exhaust reminds me how much cleaner cars are in California. This reminds me of some other disinformation I heard recently, that California was outlawing big-screen televisions. Sorry, just the ones that consume gobs of power when they are supposedly "off". I was looking at televisions at Costco the other day, and that seemed to be about 1/3 of them, based on the percentage of "energy star" labels. I'm not trying to defend every law, it's hard to write laws that apply themselves fairly, but a lot of Californians (myself included) are here because of the weather and the environment. I know plenty of people who have left the state because they have other priorities. It's a big country and there's room for everybody.
