Thank you all for your help, it is *sort of* working now. While I was able to ping the printer from my laptop (with W7), for some reason the desktop (XP) kept returning a destination unreachable error; I was able to add the printer "local," though, and XP found the driver automatically. This is ironic, because if the desktop would be able to find the printer, or the laptop be able to find the driver, all would be well! The desktop is fairly old, however, and after realizing that both the computer and printer had parallel ports, I was able to find a cable and successfully print a test page. I would still love to get the printer to work over ethernet so I can use it with my laptop, but I guess the parallel port connection will have to do for now...
