Does your printer have postscript?  IIRC, in the laserjet-4 timeframe  
this was an option that came standard with SOME printers (Mac  
versions?) that wasn't necessarily obvious from the outside (should  
show up on the test page, though.)

(Come to think of it, I think my printer was a 4mP, where 'm" was  
"mac", and this was a version of lj 4P, rather than 4M...)
