It sounds like you are using the jetdirrect ethernet card. Windows has never been able to auto-detect this setup. In XP, using the wizard, select local printer and uncleck automatically detect. Then in the dropdown box create a new TCP/IP port using the printers IP address and default settings. Then manually select the HP LaserJet 4M Plus driver.
