Use your DMM in "diode" mode or "ohms" mode, etc, to get segments to light. If you don't have one, use a 5 volt power supply and a 5.1K resistor. You should quickly be able to find the common pin, be it common anode or common cathode. Then the rest is simply probing around til you have the segments all doped out.
