But I guess that's what everyone is doing. WIZnet W7100 has integrated 10/100 PHY, 32KB dedicated buffer RAM plus 64KB XDATA RAM (it's an 8051 clone, with a separate core dedicated to TCP/IP). PIC18F6xJ6x has integrated 10basteT PHY, but very limited RAM (8KB buffer plus 3.5KB general-purpose). I think the problem is that you can use the chip area for either a 100 Mbit PHY, or for lots of RAM, but not both.
