The firmware can be ported to any pic which have the self program
capability,, like pic 18f4550.
but for that u will need to edit the firmware and the schematic also. so
will take a lot of time to make the clone.

why dont u use the SOIC package and smd components. With them u can make a
really small one.
almost 1/4 th of the original pickit2.
