Thanks for the comments. It does seem to be more trouble than it's worth.
One thing I like about web user interfaces is the cross-platform operation
without having to install anything on the host computer. But, it can be a
pain to configure a system when the only way to reach it is over Ethernet.
netbios hostname seems to work with Windows, but not Mac or Linux. It'd be
nice to have a USB user interface that you just plug in to any computer
and it comes up.

I'll keep dreaming...
