I use Pidgin on Linux and Miranda on Windows (Miranda also knows loads of protocols incl. ICQ, IRC, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Jabber etc). I used to use Opera's internal IRC client and that was really nice as a client (probably the best I ever used) butthen if you close Opera then you will be logged out of the chat server.
