FWIW under Linux CPU usage is based on total usage/power of single CPU, so in multicore/multicpu systems it's quite "normal" to see CPU use go beyond 100%. For example, when I use mencoder set for multicore on my quad I regularly see >%200 "usage" for the mencoder process.
