Basically the maglock and it's electronics bolt/screw into the wall right at the top of the door frame and the plate screws into the top of the door. When the door is closed, the plate just touches the huge electromagnet in the maglock -- when energized, the magnet prevents the door from being pulled open (that's the rating: 650lb means it would take 650lbs of force to break the magnetic force on the plate; the door would probably crack before the magnet would "let go").
