Why?  The concept is clearly flawed to begin with.  It is no surprise that
calling EXIT causes messed up UART transmission.

Again, why?  What do you think it means to exit the process and return to
the OS when there is only one process running on the machine and there is no
OS?  The concept makes no sense.
