errors than anything else, and thus distance is inversely proportional
to speed.

IIRC, the longest CAN that is possible without violating the CAN spec
was 10km at 5kbps.  The fastest CAN is 1mbps, and can only go 40m.  I
don't recall whether these were real-world figures, or theoretical
maximums that involved 'ideal' conductors, etc.

1km at a slow speed with careful attention paid to bus topology, wire
type, etc should be fine, though.
