Not that familiar with capacitive switches, but by saying capacitive, are we not saying 2 conductive (or at least partially) surfaces with a dielectric substance between. In this case one surface would be either the switch surface, or maybe a thin material between. The other conductive surface is normally a human finger. In the "in a pretty hostile environment", I can picture the human wearing heavy rubber, leather or other material gloves that may or may not be coated with water, grease, or other materials.
