I can show you a board that has a "HORIZONTAL DEFRECTION" area on it. Your cap symbol sounds familiar. It really does look like you described it. I think they may even have shaded the interior, making the "tub" look like there's "water" in it. But it does look like a pictorial representation of an aluminum electrolytic -- an electrode stuck into an electrolyte, with the other electrode (the case) wrapped around it. I tried searching for an example out there, and while I didn't find it, I would say I found a half-dozen other ways to draw a cap.
