In SX Microcontrollers, SX/B Compiler and SX-Key Tool, David Jensen wrote: Dave Hein said: I understand Parallax's reasons for dropping the SX. However, I don't understand why Parallax hasn't partnered with a PIC chip manufacturer to provide a replacement. I had multiple unpleasant reactions to these two innocent-looking sentences. Regarding the first sentence: The use of the word "dropping" suggests that the word "understand" may be inappropriate. As for the second sentence, no one would love a replacement for the SX more than I would. Unfortunately there is a broad philosophical gulf that separates the multitudinous icky Microchip designs from the speed and elegance of the SX. Icky is not easily overcome. The differences are largely lost once an interpreter or compiler is employed. But by then you are then dealing with KIPS rather than MIPS. KIPS are fine for many applications - a home alarm system comes to mind. But DSP applications like demodulating baseband QAM and DPSK signals requires MIPS and not KIPS....more MIPS than any eight-bit PIC is capable of performing. For me, that is the tragedy of the Ubicom announcement.
