You might want to consider using something like the SheevaPlug. ( ARM processor ) http://www.marvell.com/products/embedded_processors/developer/kirkwood/sheevaplug.jsp http://www.openplug.org/ The SheevaPlug ( SHPG ) cost $100 in onesies and it runs Linux. It has an ethernet port , an asynch serial port, a built in power adapter , a USB port ( 2.0 ). This means you can tap the serial data from the RFID tags , you can connect a USB web camera and look at displays , you can drive a variety of displays , ........... You can use a variety of software packages including Open CV , PHP, Python , C/C++ , Basic, Forth , Linux drivers, etc. If you want to look at using the SHPG , I can give you some free help.
