BTW Roger, it didn't come to me before but I've just remembered what
I was trying to do. The intention was to monitor the activity on an EFTPOS
terminal (quite legitimately). It's absolutely verboten to interfere electrically
with these terminals and that was one idea. If the project hadn't fizzled out
I might just have tried OCR, as photo-sensors weren't quite good enough
