Hi David, I've been doing that for years.
 From 20 to 80 devices, 20-70mA each @24V (regulated on board linearly 
to 5V and sometimes to 12 too).
RS485 @250Kbauds, from 50 to some 3-400 meters.
I use PoE standard more or less :) i.e. brown/white brown as ground, 
blue/white blue as VCC, and green/white green as data. One couple spare.

Works pretty well, even if not perfectly daisy-chained.
