I have had no real problem stripping or soldering 4 core modular telephone cable like Alpha 1604 http://www.farnell.com/datasheets/71951.pdf The same kind of cable is used on the Microchip IDC2/3 RJ11 leads. Worst thing is the insulation can't really take the soldering heat.
