Thank you for all your comments. I think the accelerometer would be overkill (though it appeals to me), the end user will be making the devices himself, so the sensor will have to be something that can be easily fitted and aligned by a layman. I'm still leaning towards the tilt sensor idea with end stop microswitches, although this maybe more redundancy than needed. Thanks Jinx that is exactly the sort of setup that I was envisaging. At present this is going into a 24F Pic with OTG USB, however if they feel soldering 64pin QFP's is beyond them, it will be split up into a 18F4550 (no OTG though) and another Pic for the display and button end of things. I will be asking for images of the current concoction as it's taken 3 weeks to get to the bottom of how this egg rotator actually works. I thought it went round like a turntable or rollered like a blood decoagulator for egg turning - after many missives on that point, I finally managed to wrangle a picture of what the customer was talking about and all became clear, except it isn't the unit to be automated.
