This is a bad situation. Either get real specs or get out of there fast. Embedded systems by definition go into larger systems. You can't design the embedded system properly without good understanding of the larger system. If you can't get good specs, detailed photographs, drawings, etc from this customer, you're just setting yourself up to look stupid in the long run.
