IEC & kettle type leads aren't quite the same thing. There's a subtle difference in that you can use the kettle plug on your PC, but not vice versa. You'll need to track down the correct socket, the one off that dead PC power supply won't work. A typical IEC lead should be rated to handle 2500w, it may just not be happy with a few litres of boiling water near it.
