RTC = real time clock - meant to keep up with the actual time and date, and it's usually battery backed so that you don't have to set the time/date every time you power up for normal processing. Are you wanting clock functions for your project so users don't need a watch, or are you going to time/date stamp some recorded data - neither is a bad idea, and adding would be a good experience, it's just typically outside the scope of a speedometer/trip meter.
