What about temperature capabilities of the insulation and PVC outer 
layer?

Standard IEC connectors are rated for 10A's but you can buy 20A 
versions. Farnell and RS have them at exorbitant prices. I doubt B&Q 
would stock them though :) (if they're still in existence).
