You need to separate commercial and hobby interests. In a commercial environment the principal driver to investigate new solutions is if existing ones are inadequate in some respect; you certainly wouldn't be praised for spending time and money reinventing the wheel for no benefit. >From a hobby/learning perspective, re-inventing the wheel or chasing new solutions just because you want to is clearly down to your own resources.
