I am assuming you will only have to do this once you probably have 
different prices for different versions and don't want anyone to upgrade
by simply changing a bit 

Create two configuration bits in eeprom
If none of the b its is set do the read once
set one bit for shorted condition
set the other for not shorted

Pics are resilient beasts they will survive a single cycle like that
