Another thing to think about then is using a "bare glass" LCD and driving it
directly from a PIC with a built in LDC driver.  It will be a bit more work,
but the result will probably be smaller with easier to read numbers in the
end and probably less power.  3 and 4 digit 7-segment LCDs are widely
available and cheaper than pre-built ASCII displays.
