I don't have a good explanation for my experience with them, other than that rolling snake-eyes multiple times can happen. Other bike-mounted gadgets seem to last - Ancient Magellan Blaser 12 (GPS), B&M headlight & dynamo... I'm thinking about an accelerometer-based power-tracking system - This needs to track wheel rpm as well, so I'm going to experiment with Olin's idea. Reed switches are certainly a fall-back position.
