I like Olin's approach on this one. As mentioned, I've had many reed switch failures in this application. Pace doubters, they are mounted with proper strain relief, in protected locations, and kept dry - Not hard in Southern California. Difficult to imagine the "abuse" postulated. I've autopsied some of the failures - Switch non-op in all of those. Considering the reliability figures claimed for reed switches, one has to wonder - Perhaps a mechanical resonance at a speed I favor? (Lance has nothing to worry about from me :) Anyway, I'm ready for a different scheme.
