It might be normal, or rather what you'd expect from the components
and method used, but not very efficient is it. I mentioned the pulse
clock because they will run for years on typically a single D battery.
If they didn't have to supply coil current it would be even more years.

It would also be feasible to convert pedal power to battery power
via the coil. If the componentry uses very little current then each
wheel turn could be topping up the battery. The faster you go the
higher the pulse so some clamping protection would be needed
