As a followup, I closed MPLAB and restarted it and all was well - 
perhaps a memory allocation problem as I do tend to stay in the 2GB ram 
committed range on my pc most of the time.  Anyone have any guesses as 
to whether there will be hiccups with Windows 7 and MPLAB compatibility?
