In a way we're already kinda getting there, the standard being quite simple: an internet connection. Once most devices have an internet connection connectivity starts skyrocketing. We're already getting close with printers, digital picture frames, blu-ray players, video came consoles and even some digital cameras with ethernet/wifi connections. uPNP, while not a perfect technology by far, does behave very seamlessly when it works. We'll get there, if you consider how far we've come in just the past 10 years it's been incredible progress (remember, 10 years ago the thought of wireless ethernet was this pie in the sky expensive thing, look where we are now, even MP3 players have WiFi).
