I started with 40x24 I think on Apple ][ and then I got a special card that was capable of 80x24 which was something very advanced by that time :-) On PC when the EGA screen appeared I always switched to 80x50 or 60 can't remember, and with VGA to 132x60. Nowadays mostly I am splitting the screen so actually I would not see too many lines from one file actually, but if I do I quite like that I can see the entire function at once.
