FWIW, I have a server at home running a getmail script that collects new messages from all my email addresses (gmail being one of them, my piclist email address being another). That machine has an IMAP server (dovecot), so no matter where I am and what machine I use all my email folders are available (I use an ssh tunnel to get to my server, much more secure then an exposed IMAP service). Plus, backing up my email becomes very easy (it's just one directory on the server). The benefit of course is I don't rely on anything other service to store my email, it's all on my home machine. Another benefit is when I'm at home accessing my email folders is WAY faster then an online service. Obviously when my internet link goes down I loose access, but fortunately that's been pretty rare.
