I think that you probably can solve this with a different setup. I also use Gmail for archiving the piclist messages. But I don't use IMAP to access them; I use POP. This means that my email client (40tude Dialog) only sees the new messages (and the ones I haven't yet deleted locally). I have set the client to automatically delete older messages, so my local pool of messages never grows too big. If I want to see older messages, I can go online.
