If the stepper was driven, it could be activated with a foot pedal. Go down with a press, automatic return up on release. Although a floppy stepper is intended to move as a stepper, and a screw drive would be more like a linear movement for drilling. Actually, that's pretty much the mechanism in a 3.5" drive.
