I put a knob on the back end of the stepper motor shaft to do the up-and-down, used the spinner motor from a daisywheel printer to do the drilling, the chuck was guts of a panel-mount locking 1/8" milspec potentiometer. I still use it, only ever broke a drill bit if I did something stupid. Attached is a picture.
